Keeping Older Minds Engaged with Activities At-Home

Here at Portland Nursing Home, we understand the importance of being able to access different activities.

As we reach different stages of our lives, it’s essential that we continue to enjoy the activities we love doing and exercise the mind. No one should have to experience feelings of boredom or isolation so, to improve wellbeing, different activities should be enjoyed at home.

From regular activity sessions to entertainment sessions, we’ve seen the incredible boost different activities can give to individuals. So, for some inspiration on what you and your loved ones can enjoy at home, here are the things our residents love doing.

Reading

Reading provides an incredible opportunity to exercise the mind. From conjuring up different worlds to experiencing the thoughts and feelings of a character on the page, books offer an experience capable of boosting moods and emotions.

Our residents enjoy a range of classic and modern tales, enjoying frequent sessions of escapism. While others loved revisiting some of their favourite stories from the past, others take time to discuss books with one another, bonding over their favourite passages.

Craft sessions

Arts and crafts give people an ideal chance to stimulate their mind. By inspiring creativity, individuals have the opportunity to express themselves. It could be anything from knitting and crochet to painting and drawing; they all offer a calming experience.

Our regular art sessions always lead to plenty of socialising too. Some of our residents enjoy working on projects together, while others simply enjoy the company of each other, benefiting from the chance to be inspired by each other’s creativity.

Photographs

The team at Portland Nursing Home regularly go through old photos with our residents. It offers a therapeutic opportunity to revisit their favourite memories from the past and discuss significant moments with others. From family photo albums and journals to images of favourite places or items, there’s terrific escapism accessible to everyone.

Albums

Music offers a very calming experience, having the power to take people back to moments in their past. So, stick on some music and take joy from being able to hum, sing and dance along to significant songs and albums. The Portland team are always playing music to residents, even singing along and dancing!

Stay connected

There’s no better pleasure than catching up with loved ones. While physical catch-ups are always best, you don’t have to be face to face to connect with others. At Portland, we frequently support residents in video calling their nearest and dearest, giving them a chance to catch up and bond with their friends and family.

There’s plenty of things to do at home, but these are just a few of our favourites. From games to exercises sessions, there’s plenty of activities to enjoy the comfort of your own home.
