Gardening activities to day trips out, here is what we have been up

With Summer now in full swing and lockdown restrictions beginning to ease, we have been making the most of every minute with lots of fun activities in and even out of Portland Nursing Home.

At our home we promote an active lifestyle and our wonderful care staff have been busy organising a number of fun activities for our residents to enjoy.

Pamper sessions

Touch can be a huge part of engaging people through senses, and we’ve found massage to be one of the best ways to incorporate that into life at our home.

Recently our residents have enjoyed unwinding with pamper sessions that include manicures and a little massage at the end. Providing stimulation for the mind, it is also a great relaxer and can lead to some valuable socialisation.

Arts & Craft activities

Some of the best ways to spend an afternoon is by getting stuck into an arts and crafts session.

To improve wellbeing and keep the mind as active as possible, we understand how crucial it is to continue to enjoy different that support the brain.

Our residents have loved our regular arts and craft afternoons as they provide the perfect opportunity for socialising with other residents in the home.

 Gardening activities

Surrounding our Buxton-based home are beautiful landscaped gardens that provide ample hard walking surfaces and seating, along with plenty of attractive flora and fauna for our residents to explore.

Recently at our home, residents have jumped at the opportunity to spend time in our sunny garden by planting herbs for our community herb garden.

Gardening is one of the very few activities that provide our residents a near-effortless way to stay active. Simply pottering around in the garden can help alleviate any stress and is a delight for the senses as we can absorb all the smells and sights of the colourful garden.

Day Trips

Whilst Portland Nursing Home is an independent setting for our residents, the home is still fully integrated with the local Buxton community.

As restrictions begin to ease, our home has been taking day trips out into the local village. Before COVID-19, our residents used to head out to the local shops, post office, library and the church.

One of our favourite recent trips was to the local coffee shop which our resident, Ruth, enjoyed very much.

Visitations

Following the recent Government guidance, as of 19 July, all our visiting guidance has remained the same at Portland Nursing Home.

  • All visits are appointment only
  • Up to 5 named visitors can visit
  • A test is required prior to entering our home
  • Visitations are only allowed when a negative test has been completed
  • Face coverings and PPE are mandatory when visiting our home

The health, safety and wellbeing of our residents and care team are always our top priorities.

We have loved being able to welcome back people into our home and we can’t wait to see more of you soon.

Portland is welcoming new residents and has clear policies and procedures in place to be able to do this safely.
